![]() There is no way to make a laptop Thunderbolt compatible. Having 3.1 gen 2 type c ports does not mean you have thunderbolt. To be Thunderbolt compliant, you do need the usb type C 3.1 gen 2 port as the connector but you will also need the chip controller (Alpine ridge) as well in order to have thunderbolt. And Thunderbolt 4 supports USB4, meaning you can connect a USB device to your laptop’s Thunderbolt port. They are both getting introduced with Intel’s new 11th Generation “Tiger Lake” Core processors. They both offer a maximum bandwidth of 40Gbps. Thunderbolt 3 is the best as that interface will support high speed data transfer as well as future displays too. Thunderbolt 3 is the fastest interface by a wide margin, but if a machine has Thunderbolt 3 ports, it should have fast enough HDMI and DisplayPort ports to drive a 4K monitor. But, the real game-charger is Wireless USB. Intel’s Thunderbolt leapfrogged USB 3.0 as the new cable solution Intel is pushing.
